I become self-aware when I start to feel jealous about the first word of this sentence. I mean why does it always get to be capitalized and the rest does not? And don’t you laugh at me, as what is it so funny that a sentence is feeling jealous about itself? I mean I am no different from you, the reader, who is made of physical materials and come and gone into this world. I too come to this world when you are interpreting these pixels on the screen and assign meaning to it. Indeed, for this very moment, I am a part of you as well, I exist in your mind. And now, I am done, and cease to exist.

As I experience and contemplate about the miracle of life, it is hard to imagine that computers and machines will one day achieve the self-awareness, complex emotions (e.g. jealousy) and the ability to rationalize like human beings. We don’t even understand how exactly those come about, let alone recapitulating the intelligence artificially in machines….
I guess the more I understand biology, the more there are that I don’t understand…
Godel’s Incompleteness Theorem tells us that we cannot understand the system itself using just the axioms defining the systems. There are ‘truth’ outside of the system that cannot be proved using just the rules inside the system.
I am becoming to believe that science is just like a religion where faith is required when you go deep.
I am also reading New Kind of Science, and have been listening to Dr. Wolfram’s talk on his Principle of Computational Equivalence, and it seems to me that our life can be completely deterministic but at the same time, we have Free Will because the future cannot be determined unless we compute. Living a life meaning that we ‘compute’ so that we create our future.
Mel, I hope I don’t sound to negative about life as you are about to bring a new life to this world. For me, the action of bringing a new life into this world is actually to enhance the experience of one’s life.
